Is Marriage Overrated?

Is marriage really all it is cracked up to be or is it overrated?
In the past marriage had been viewed as a key component of life. Do you ever think back and wonder why is it that our grandparents made it to 50, or 60+ years of marriage and yet today people can have multiple marriages without thinking twice about it? Do we think and look at marriage differently today? I’d say yes to that question although I do feel we are living a different life today than our grandparents did. Do you think marriage may be considered overrated because today we have more choices or maybe people stay in a marriage that they are unhappy in because it’s easier?
Maybe it is easier for us to move on, I mean why would we do the work to understand who our partner is (this is so important, especially at the beginning of a relationship), we lack communication, blame our partners, and shut down making divorces an easier option. Do you feel like our grandparents communicate better than us? Maybe more divorces are happening because of communication issues, financial or even failure to identify true compatibility in our partners.
Couples may look for ways to make their marriage better, yet the expectations and the fantasy of a perfect marriage can come crashing down leaving one or both parties disappointed and ultimately pulling away from the marriage. An important part of marriage is knowing you and your partner are willing to do the work to better understand your partner…showing up, and being honest with who you are. Also, it is important to find balance in honoring your partner and yourself at the same time without resentment.
Final thoughts, marriage is or isn’t overrated and the decision to marry or not is a personal one that should be based on your own values, goals, and circumstances.
